Classroom Expectations and Policies

Classroom Expectations

All the rules are to allow you to be fully prepared for a high school classroom, and to excel in this English class. We will go over these expectations and policies on the first day of class, and we can add ideas that you have to complete these lists.

  • Be respectful (to yourself, the classroom, and to others)
  • Be on time to class by being seated when the last bell rings
  • Be prepared everyday by having all the required materials under the tab "Materials"
  • Have your homework completed and handed in before the last bell rings and class starts
  • Raise your hand and wait to be called on
  • Listen while others are speaking
  • Participate in all class activities

Technology Usage Policy:

I am a firm believer that technology is a great and useful tool in the classroom to aid in our research and understanding for the content we will be covering this semester. However, this technology starts off as an useful tool, but can quickly become abused and a distraction. To avoid this from happening here are some simple guidelines to be aware of:

Cell Phones: Cell phone usage is not allowed in the classroom. It must be set on vibrate and either stored in your pocket, or away in a backpack. The first time you are caught using a cell phone, I will issue a verbal warning. The second time you are caught using a cell phone, I will confiscate it until the end of class. The third time you are caught using a cell phone, I will confiscate it and give it to the main office, where you will have to retrieve it at the end of the day. If you are expecting an important call, let me know before class begins, and you may take the call outside of the classroom, and then return back to class.

Laptops/iPads: At least twice a week we will be using laptops, or iPads. If you do not own a laptop or iPad, tell me on the first day of class, and I will arrange for you to borrow one from the technology department when we use them in class. If you are using a laptop or iPad during class for other reasons other than classwork (ie: Internet surfing, social media, messaging apps etc.), or are using the laptop or iPad at an improper time, the policy is the same for cell phones, listed above.

Absence Policy:

I understand that you may have a sickness/obligation that causes you to miss class. However, you are still held responsible for the work that you have missed on days you were absent. On the first day of class you will be assigned a "homework buddy" for instances such as those listed above, where you can find out the homework that will be due the next day in class. If you have an issue completing the assignments, you can always talk to me during the times and days listed under the tab "Ms. Michas' Contact Information" and I can help you, or give you an extension under certain circumstances. If you are absent and there is a test the next day when you return to class, you will be allowed one extra day to study, and take it the following day of the test. If you are absent on the day of a test, you can take a  make-up test on the day you return to class.

Late Policy:

In order to have an excused late slip, following the policy stated in Sacred Heart High School's Rule Book:

If you are late to class, you must have a note from a teacher, or from the main office stating the reason why you were late to class. For example, if you were kept after class talking to a teacher and the final bell rings and  you are not in my classroom, that teacher must give you a note with their name, date, time you left their classroom, and why you stayed after class. The same rule applies if you were in the main office at the time the final bell rang.

However, if you are late to class on your own accord, the first time you will receive a verbal warning after class. The second time you are late to class, you must get a late slip from the main office. For the third time (and any instance after that), I will begin deducting points from your participation grade.
